Cranleigh

Intro

Surrey County Council’s ambitious programme, “Libraries for Life”, aims to increase book issues and library use throughout the county.

Brief

Cranleigh Library is a small, community library in the heart of the village. We were asked by Surrey County Council to provide a solution to modernise the library and increase appeal and usage. Particular emphasis was placed on overcoming the lack of natural light and brightening an interior that was dominated by a light wood vaulted ceiling.

Solution

Being a small, community library, Cranleigh presented a new challenge for us: the design and final product had to feel welcoming and pleasant to use for a broad cross-section of people whilst retaining the feel of it belonging to the community as a whole.

To overcome the dark interior and create an inviting and relaxing space, bright colours were employed. For the shelving, study tables and counter, pastel oak wood and coloured laminates were sourced to provide colour and interest. To complement the shelving and enhance the overall feel of the space, light colours were applied to the walls while vibrant colours were specified for soft furnishings.

Outcome

The library has been well received by the community and the staff at Cranleigh. There has been a dramatic increase in new memberships, issues and general usage.
